Make a Discord soundboard sound
Discord soundboard sounds must be short MP3 or OGG files under 512 KB. Open your clip, pick the best few seconds, boost it to full volume and download a ready-to-upload MP3. Your file never leaves your device.
Private by design: everything happens in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
How to make a Discord soundboard sound
- Open the clip you want to use: an MP3, WAV, voice memo or even a video file.
- Drag the selection window (up to 4.9 seconds) to the best moment and press Play selection to check it.
- Keep Boost to full volume on so your sound isn't drowned out in voice chat.
- Click Cut & download MP3, then in Discord go to Server Settings → Soundboard → Upload Sound.
Features
Fits Discord's limits
Clips are capped just under 5 seconds and saved as MP3, typically under 100 KB: far inside the 512 KB limit.
Volume boost
Quiet recordings are raised to full volume without distortion, so they cut through the conversation.
Any source file
Works with MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG and FLAC files, and with the sound from MP4 or MOV videos.
Nothing uploaded
Trimming and encoding happen in your browser. Only you decide where the finished sound goes.
Tips for a great soundboard sound
- Short is better. One or two seconds is often funnier and less annoying than the full five.
- Cut right on the sound. Start the selection just before it begins, so there's no awkward silence when someone presses it.
- Keep the boost on unless the clip is already loud. Clipped, distorted audio is worse than slightly quiet audio.
Record your own
Original sounds are the safest and often the funniest: record a catchphrase with the voice recorder, then bring it here to trim it. Want lots of sounds ready to go in your browser? Try the sound effects board.
Frequently asked questions
What are Discord's soundboard requirements?
Discord accepts MP3 or OGG files up to 512 KB. Discord says sounds can be up to 5 seconds long (some guides quote 5.2). This tool keeps clips at 4.9 seconds or less, because MP3 encoding adds a few milliseconds, so they always upload.
Why won't Discord accept my sound?
Usually it is too long, too large, or not an MP3/OGG file. Make it here and it will meet all three requirements. You also need permission to add expressions (Create or Manage Expressions) on that server.
How many custom sounds can a server have?
It depends on the server's boost level. Servers start with a handful of slots and get more as they level up through Server Boosts.
Can I use a sound from a YouTube video?
Only use audio you have the right to use: your own recordings, royalty-free sounds, or clips you have permission for. We don't download from YouTube or other sites.
Can I make a sound for my personal soundboard in other apps?
Yes. Short MP3s work in OBS, Streamlabs and most soundboard apps. For a bigger board in your browser, try our sound effects board.
