Webcam test: check your camera online
Click Start, allow camera access, and see yourself instantly. We show the real resolution and frame rate your camera delivers, so you know exactly how you will look on Zoom, Teams or Meet. The video never leaves your device.
Your camera preview will appear here.
Private by design: everything happens in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
How to test your webcam
- Click Start webcam test and choose Allow when your browser asks for the camera.
- Check the live preview, plus the resolution and frame rate your camera is actually delivering.
- Try 720p, 1080p or 4K to see the best quality your camera supports, and switch cameras if you have more than one.
- Take a snapshot if you want to check framing or lighting more closely. It downloads straight to your device.
Features
Real numbers
Resolution and frame rate are measured from the live video, not taken from the box the camera came in.
Try every quality
Ask for 720p, 1080p or 4K and see what your camera really falls back to.
Mirror and snapshot
See yourself as others do (or mirrored, like a selfie) and save a still image.
Completely private
The video stays on your device. Nothing is recorded or uploaded, and the camera turns off when you stop.
Look better on video calls
- Light from the front. Face a window or put a lamp behind your screen. Light from behind turns you into a silhouette.
- Camera at eye level. Raise your laptop on a few books so the camera isn't looking up your nose.
- Clean the lens. A fingerprint smudge makes even a good webcam look foggy.
- Leave a little headroom. Your eyes should sit about a third of the way down the frame.
What resolution do I need?
Most video calls send 720p, so a 1080p webcam is plenty. Higher resolutions help for streaming, recording and digital zoom, but lighting makes a bigger difference to image quality than pixels.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my webcam say "in use" or show a black screen?
Only one app can use most webcams at a time. Close Zoom, Teams, Skype, OBS or the Camera app and try again. Some laptops also have a privacy shutter or a camera key (often F8 or F10) that disables the camera.
How do I allow camera access?
Click the camera or lock icon in the address bar and set Camera to Allow, then reload. On Windows, also check Settings → Privacy & security → Camera; on a Mac, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera.
Why is my frame rate low?
Webcams lower their frame rate in dim light to gather more light per frame. Turn on a lamp facing you and the frame rate usually jumps back to 30 fps.
My camera says 1080p but shows 720p. Why?
Click 1080p: browsers often start with a lower default. If it still shows 720p, the camera, the USB port (use a USB 3 port) or the cable may be limiting it.
Is this webcam test safe?
Yes. The video is shown only on your screen and is never recorded or uploaded. The camera light switches off as soon as you press Stop or leave the page.
