Ideas for using sound effects

  • Classroom and quizzes: a correct ding and wrong buzzer make question time more fun, and a countdown keeps it moving.
  • Presentations and events: a drum roll before an announcement, applause after it.
  • Streams and podcasts: map your favourite reactions to keys and trigger them without looking.
  • Family game night: game-show sounds turn any trivia round into an event.

Play sound effects into Zoom, Teams, Discord or OBS

  1. Install a free virtual audio cable: VB-Audio Virtual Cable on Windows or BlackHole on Mac. Restart if asked.
  2. On this page, open Play into Discord, Zoom or OBS, click Show output devices and choose CABLE Input (or BlackHole).
  3. Keep Also play on my default speakers on so you hear the sounds too.
  4. In your call app, set the microphone to CABLE Output (or BlackHole). In OBS, add it as an audio input source instead.

A virtual cable carries only the sound effects. To mix in your voice, use VoiceMeeter (Windows) or Loopback (Mac), or add both as separate sources in OBS.

Make your own sound effects

Record a catchphrase with the voice recorder, trim it with the audio cutter, and add it here as a pad. Making a sound for Discord's built-in soundboard? Use theDiscord sound maker.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use these sound effects in my videos, streams or lessons?

Yes. The built-in sounds are synthesised by this page rather than taken from recordings, so they are free to use, including in monetised videos and streams. For clips you add yourself, make sure you have the right to use them.

How do I use sound effects in a quiz or classroom?

Open the board on the computer connected to the projector or speakers. Use the keys 5 (wrong buzzer) and 6 (correct ding) for answers, 2 for a drum roll before a reveal, and 7 for applause. Press Esc to stop a sound early.

How do I play sound effects in Zoom, Teams or Discord?

Install a free virtual audio cable (VB-Audio Cable on Windows, BlackHole on Mac), choose it as the output device on this page, then select it as your microphone in the call app. The full steps are below.

Where are my custom sounds stored?

In your browser's own storage on this device. They are not uploaded. Clearing your browsing data or using a private window removes them.

Can I upload my own sound to Discord's soundboard instead?

Yes. Discord needs very short, small MP3 files. Our Discord sound maker trims any clip to 5 seconds and keeps it under 512 KB.

Does it work on phones and tablets?

Yes, tap the pads to play sounds. Keyboard shortcuts and choosing an output device work best on a computer.
